August 07, 2009
Following a trial run in June 2009, Chinese telecom equipment supplier Huawei recently announced the commercial launch of a HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Evolution) network in Portugal for local telecom operator Sonaecom, a subsidiary of Sonae SGPS SA, the Sina Tech News reported on August 5. Under the agreement signed between Huawei and Sonaecom, Huawei will upgrade Sonaecom's UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) network with HSPA+ technology. The HSPA+ network will improve Sonaecom's 3G mobile broadband services, allowing its users to enjoy a downlink speed of up to 21.6 Mbps. As of the end of the second quarter of 2009, Huawei had deployed over ten HSPA+ networks worldwide, according to the same source.
